Cleveland Street, Chippendale
Amândio Castanheira was the project leader on this re-development which is set within the former MacRobertson’s chocolate factory and a heritage significant building. The re-design of the existing 4 storey building with a total planned area of 2,499m² into a contemporary office building embraced the original industrial bones of double brick warehouse construction and exposed timber beams and columns. 11 parking bays are provided on the ground floor by means of car stacker parking system.
(NB: This project was undertaken under Ian Poole Architect)
East London, South Africa
Alchemy were the design architects on this project commissioned in 2008. This very long thin portion of land situated between an existing railway line and one of the main arterial roads leading into East London allowed great possibilities for a commercial development with imposing visibility to the road. The width of the site was ideal for this form of development as parking was achieved in two semi basement levels with 3 floors above ground for the office floor plates.
The distinctive front ‘V’ shaped entrance, to be clad in copper plates, allows the length of the building to change direction following the boundary shape. Metal sun screen louvers installed vertically protect the office areas from direct northern sun throughout the day.

Kopi K@t - Edenvale, Johannesburg
Alchemy were the design architects on this retail project commissioned in 2005. The brief required the store to become the ‘selling tool’ and capture the entire business concept of Kopi-K@t. The theme of “digital space & high-tech” is to be felt by prospective customers in the use of materials such as aluminium, stainless steel and glass.
Transparency and the use of translucent and rear illuminated wall panels enhance the ‘photo lab’ feel. The use of the bright brand colour orange is offset by utilising stainless steel and highly polished surfaces. Indirect lighting, floor lighting and bright graphics reinforce the clean minimalist ‘high-tech’ environment of the technological age.
Morningside, Johannesburg
